Implemented Lead-Free Capability

EPIC’s focus on equipment optimization related to Synchronous Flow Manufacturing has provided an additional benefit. Our vapor phase oven supports lead-free soldering at conventional temperatures. In addition, the equipment supports a high degree of flexibility in ALL reflow processing. Advantages include:

 

  • The oven uses an inert TeflonŽ-based liquid to create a “fog” that the PCBs travel through.
  • The high moisture content atmosphere has superior thermal transfer properties compared to IR or Convection systems.
  • The entire board reaches the same temperature at the same time, eliminating shadowing effects or hot spots.
  • One profile “fits all” versus continuous set-up / changeover for different products.

 

EPIC has been producing SMT assemblies with lead-free solder since Jan. 2004 and can support use of the following lead-free alloys:

  • Tin/silver
  • Tin/silver/copper
  • Tin/silver/bismuth

EPIC’s lead-free solder process is operated at a temperature of
230° C, significantly lower than convection reflow. Cleanliness levels have been validated by a third-party testing service using ION Chromatography and SIR testing and a copy of the report is available on request.  EPIC has also validated all profiles as being within component tolerance specifications.
 
EPIC works with its customers on a case-by-case basis to determine product requirements relative to lead-free processing.
